On February 11, 2017, The American Legion Department of Oregon Area 4 High School Oratorical contest took place at American Legion Post 19 in The Dalles, Oregon. Stevens-Chute Post 4 and District 5 winner from Summit High School Danielle Axten competed against La Grande Post 43 and District 5 winner from Imbler High School Emily Faulk. Emily was the 2015-2016 Department of Oregon High School Oratorical Runner-Up. Both contestants gave their prepared and assigned orations to American Legion officers and members from both Districts 5 and 6 and 3 judges. After the scores were calculated, Danielle Axten became the 2016-2017 The American Legion Department of Oregon Area 4 High School Oratorical winner. Danielle will compete against the Area 1, 2, and 3 winners at the Department of Oregon contest at Oregon Department of Veterans Affairs in Salem, Oregon March 4, 2017.
