American Legion Post 327 is named after U.S. Navy veteran LaVerne Schmit. Schmit was born in Bellwood, Nebraska on July 19, 1921. He joined the Navy and was attached to the Patrol Squadron VP-52. He was killed in Bermuda in 1943 at the age of 22.
