THE POST WAS NAMED AFTER JOHN FRANSIS GREINER WHO WAS BORN ON A FARM TEN MILES EAST OF NIOBRARA , WHERE HE GREW TO YOUNG MANHOOD AND FARMED WITH HIS FATHER .
He was drafted for the war in 1917 but was not called until march of 1918. He joined the army and then sailed to France spending his 23 rd, birthday at sea.he was a member of COB 355 Infantry , 89 Division .Upon arriving in England , he was in training one month when he was sent to the trenches and fought his first battle at St Mihiel. From that time on he was almost constantly at the front until he fell in the battle of Argonne Forest. He died on November 5th ,1918, and was buried in France; Three years later his body was returned to the United States and was laid to rest at the L’Eau Qui Court Cemetery in Niobrara .
Frank Mares was Post 224 first Commander.
The post provides a Color Guard for all football games. The post also works with the VFW post to provide a Memorial Day Program, for Funerals for vets and a color Guard for all Parades.
