American Legion National Commander Charles E. Schmidt of the Department of Oregon led a Veterans Awareness Walk with more than 50 Legionnaires completing a two mile course through downtown Saint Joseph, Missouri.

National Commander Schmidt was born in Rock Port, Missouri and raised in nearby Craig, Missouri, both in Department of Missouri's Fourth District.

Saint Joseph Deputy Mayor Pat Jones presented National Commander Schmidt with a proclamation from the City of Saint Joseph from Mayor Bill Faulkner which declared the day as "American Legion Veterans Awareness Walk Day".

After the walk, National Commander Schmidt toured the Pony Express Museum in Saint Joseph before proceeding to a "Meet and Greet" at Dick Munkres Post 287 in Savannah and a dinner in his honor to be held at Craig School and sponsored by Story - Hardin Post 164 in Craig, Missouri.
