Past National Vice Commander David N. Voyles of Post 359 (who is also a Past Commander of The American Legion Department of Missouri) became the first ever recipient of the Commander's Award at the 96th Annual Convention of The American Legion Department of Missouri on 12 July 2014. The award was created by Department Commander Thomas K. Goodin to recognize a distinguished Legionnaire in the Department who was giving exemplary service to the Department and its members.
