Delegates to The American Legion’s 93rd National Convention at Minneapolis, Minnesota, elected David N. Voyles of Pony Express Post 359 in Saint Joseph, Missouri, as one of five National Vice Commanders for The American Legion for the 2011 - 2012 year.

David N. Voyles established his eligibility for membership in The American Legion through service in Vietnam as a paratrooper with the 75th Infantry Recon Section, U.S. Army, from August 1970 to March 1972. Legionnaire Voyles was awarded the Bronze Star, Vietnam Campaign Medal and Army Commendation Medal with valor device during his service.

Legionnaire Voyles joined American Legion Pony Express Post 359 of the Department of Missouri in 1976 and was honored with a LIFE Membership in Post 359 on June 15, 1992. In the 36 years he has been a member of Post 359, he served his Post as Finance Officer, Second Vice Commander, First Vice Commander, and Commander, and during his term as Commander in 1988 – 1989 led the Post “Over the Top” in membership and inaugurated several activities and projects designed to serve the community and to further the principals of The American Legion.

Legionnaire Voyles also served in the Fourth District of The American Legion Department of Missouri as Southern Vice Commander from 1990 – 1992 leading the District “Over The Top” in membership and as District Commander from 1992 – 1994.

Legionnaire Voyles also served on the Department level as Western Vice Commander from 1996 – 1997 and as Department Commander from 1998 – 1999. He also served on several Department Committees including Baseball, Distinguished Guests, Foundation, and Membership. Legionnaire Voyles also served as Department of Missouri Alternate National Executive Committeeman from 2001 – 2004 and as National Executive Committeeman from 2004 – 2008.

Legionnaire Voyles has served at the National level on the Citizens Flag Alliance Advisory Commission, Foreign Relations Commission, Internal Affairs Liaison Committee, Legislative Council, Public Relations Liaison Committee, Veterans Preference Committee and National Executive Committee.

National Vice Commander Voyles served a one-year term. He is the first member of Post 359 to be selected as one of the National Constitutional Officers.
