The newly elected 2016-2017 American Legion National Commander Charles E. Schmidt currently is from the Department of Oregon. Commander Schmidt originally grew up in Craig, Missouri and got his start in The American Legion at the Story-Hardin Post 164. As the National Commander toured the Department of Missouri his itinerary was modified to allow him to have his "Homecoming" dinner at Craig, Missouri. The National Commander toured the 4th District on October 29th. The day included a National Emergency Fund 5K fundraising walk in Saint Joseph, Missouri. The afternoon was spent with a "meet-n-greet" at Dick Munkres Post 287 in Savannah. The evening concluded with the homecoming dinner at Craig. The American Legion Riders from Chapter 445 (Edgerton) and Chapter 287 (Savannah) provided the entourage with a motorcycle escort from Saint Joseph to Savannah, then from Savannah to Craig. The following pictures were taken at the "meet-n-greet" at Post 287. SPECIAL NOTE: Dick Munkres Post 287 feels very fortunate to have three National Commander's Visits within the last 6 years: Fang A. Wong (2011), Dale Barnett (2015), and now Charles E. Schmidt (2016)!
