Altenthal-Joerns Post 158 was founded September 23, 1919, with C.W. Knox as its first Commander. The name was selected in honor of two local men who had died in World War I, Clarence C. Altenthal and Clark A. Joerns. After a brief dormant period from 1921-1924, the group was reorganized in February, 1924, and has continued to exist since that time. The original meeting place was a room over Blick's tavern on South High Street in Jackson. Post 158 bought its present home when the Jackson Implement Company moved to a different location.
