American Legion donates $1,000 to Special Olympics team: The Sons of the American Legion Squadron 79 and the American Legion Post 79 recently made a $1,000 donation to Richey Elementary School to benefit its Special Olympics team and the school’s after-school enrichment program, the WHEEL.

Representing the squadron during the check presentation were, from left, Jim Perez, past commander; Larry “Pops” Kelly, second vice president; Mark Harris, adjutant finance officer; and Edward Miller, commander. Representing the post was Ed White, adjutant.

The representatives, who were greeted by the children of the Special Olympics team, were invited to watch a video of the team at the Special Olympics, as well as tour the WHEEL program’s organic garden. The program, developed by teachers, offers well-behaved students the opportunity to stay after school and work in several areas of interest, including ceramics, cooking, theater, journalism, gardening and sewing.
