What Makes this Post Unique
Post 53 received its Permanent Charter on June 15, 1924, and was was named to honor, Frank A. Campbell and Arthur D. Lossing, who were the first two men killed in World War I from the Seminole County, Florida area. On February 23, 1919 a monument was presented to the City of Sanford to honor the young men who lost their lives during the war, it is in the form of a “Broken Shaft” which is emblematic of the lives which were given to the cause of right and justice, in the prime of their young manhood. It is inscribed with the names of the men who were lost, the date of presentation and the quotation; “Only those are fit to live who do not fear to die.” The names inscribed are Frank A. Campbell, Arthur D. Lossing, Archie B. Liles, Joseph S. Laing, J. Oscar White, Harry Phillips, Carl Malm, Edwin J. Robinson, M.W. Lovell, Jr., George W. Calhoun and Hardy Jenkins. The unveiling was done by the sister of Arthur D. Lossing, Beth Lossing. The monument now resides at the Veterans Memorial Park in downtown Sanford where it was relocated from Campbell-Lossing Post #53 at 2874 S. Sanford Avenue, Sanford, Florida.
