About This Post

Post Namesake
As the story goes, Bob Markham and Dewitt B. Tilden were friends and members at the same American Legion post. Tilden had encouraged Markham on numerous occasions to form his own post in Atlantic Beach. Markham checked with department Headquarter on how to start a new post. After receiving all the information and forms necessary, he decided to give it a try. Markham and his wife,Dottie, went out in the area and eventually recruited the 15 members needed and submitted the paperwork. A temporary charter was issued and Bob Markham was elected as Post Commander of Atlantic Beach American Legion Post 316. Bob Markham was again Post 316 Commander when Dewitt B. Tilden passed away. To honor his friend and fellow Legionnaire, who he said , if it was not for all the encouragement from Dewitt, Post 316 would not be what it is today. So Post 316 was changed to Dewitt B. Tilden Memorial American Legion Post 316.
