Hugh Gilbert American Legion Post 138, Port Tampa City, Florida, is affiliated with the National Organization of The American Legion under the jurisdiction of The American Legion, Department of Florida, as is documented in the “Constitution of The American Legion, Department of Florida”, as adopted at the Department Convention of 1946 and amended at Department Conventions through 2013. Post 138 received its original “Temporary Charter” on May 11, 1945, with a subsequent “Permanent Charter” approved..

On 26 June, 2014, the American Legion Riders Chapter 138 hosted the AMBUCS Vet Bike (Therapy Cycle) presentation to Marine Corps Veteran Shawn James. AMBUCS, a non-profit 501.c.3 corporation, donated the bike which was designed and built with specifications of the therapy needs of Shawn James as provided by his medical team at James Haley VAMC.
