What Makes this Post Unique

On May 11, 1938, the Garner-Grant Post of the American Legion was organized at Dade Park with 45 members. Mr. P.B. Howell was Post Commander. Post meetings were held wherever an open door could be found. In 1940, a motion was made and approved to build a Legion hall on the NW corner of the James Property facing Bushnell Highway #48. The James’ had donated the property for that purpose. The blocks to build the Post Headquarters were priced at $539.40. In the 1940’s, Post member Martin Cherry invented a fire bomb which had been accepted by Chemical Warfare Services for military use. Ms. Etty Lou Gutton became the only female Commander of Post 101 until she died in a tragic traffic accident on the road in front of Post 101. The Post also sponsored the first Sumter County fair, including adding a rodeo in the 1940’s. Post 101 has always taken pride in sponsoring many community and charitable events. That tradition continues today.
