The Ashley Rochelle Abel Memorial Scholarship fund was set up to provide an annual scholarship to Otero Junior College Nursing Program beginning in the fall of 2015.

Ashley passed away 15 January 2014 due to an automobile accident caused by a brain aneurysm from a traumatic brain injury she suffered in 2010 when she was viciously attacked by another student in Scott Community High School in Scott City, KS.

After Ashley was attacked she had to relearn how to learn. This did not detour her drive to help others. In fact it made her work that much harder. Ashley completed her CNA training her Junior year of high school at Cheraw High School. She then took and passed the EMT class and started fulfilling her prerequisites for the Otero Junior College Nursing Program.

Ashley had a desire to help others and this was demonstrated by her daily. She worked at the Fowler Nursing Home, was a Patriot Guard Rider, and she actively participated in the Wayne Kash Memorial Toy Run and Toy Dance. It is the desire of the family to help someone who has that same desire to help others and give back to their community.

There has been a fund set up at Colorado East Bank in La Junta, CO. Anyone wishing to make a donation to the fund may send their donation to:
