In October of this year the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary of Post 44 was formed.
As a part of our Veteran's Affairs responsibilities, Post 44 has performed Memorial Day services almost since it's inception. This is a key aspect of ensuring that all military members and their families know their sacrifices are recognised and honored.
On this day Postt 44 held a Memorial Day service tand parade o honor our local fallen soldier, Guy Utter.
On this day, as a part of it's Americanism responsibilites, Post 44 lead it's first Fourth of July parade. With COlor Guard on horseback, the American Legion led the parade down Lincoln Avenue - and has every year since.
Four Memorial founttains, honoring local World War I veterans were dedicated and placed along Lincoln Avenue. One of these fountains remains fully intact and is on display outside our local Tread of Pioneers museum.
From the battlefields of World War I, weary soldiers brought home the memory of a landscape transformed by wild poppies, red as the blood of fallen soldiers. The poppy became a symbol of the sacrifice of lives in war and represented the hope that none had died in vain. The AL Ladies Auxiliary of Post 44 held their first poppy drive on this..
Post 44 Organizes Community events to celebrate Independence Day including parades, rodeo, fireworks & 3 nights of dances.
The Post remained in charge of organizing these events until the mid 60's when the town took it over.
Post 44 purchased and remodeled the old Cheiftain building which provided a place for community meetings and dances. It was the place of great comradrie for many years.
Post 44 organizes the High School Boys State. (Girls State begins in 1951)
It was this year that Post 44 had it's peak membership - 170. This is likely the result of the numbers of soldiers in both WW I and WW II.

Post 44 sold it's Cheiftain building, which had become known as the Legionaaire Community buildingand purchased the Dinius building at 5th and LIncoln. The lower floor of this building was used as a community space and the town's library.
This was the last Memroial Day parade down Lincoln Avenue with the Boy Scouts. Ceremonies now take place at the Steamboat Springs cemetary.
Post 44 worked with the CIty of Steamboat Springs to buld a new community center. his bulding was located next to the town library.
Post 44 began implementing the American Legion Blue Star Banner program, to recognize and honor families in the community with a member currently serving in the military.
Post 44 is involved in the planning of the new COmmunity Center. It is also a major contributor as noted by the American Legion symbol embossed in the main room floor.
Post 44 assists the community of Steamboat Springs in being awarded the Most Veteran Friendly Little City in Colorado. This is an honor bestowed by the Employer Support of the Guard & Reserve.
Post 44 held a flag retirement ceremony. It was a great event with over a hundred flags properly retired.
