Charter of Post 44

Apr 1, 1920
World War 1. The War to end all Wars cost this nation greatly, and Routt County certainly paid it's fair share. Leo Hill was the son of C.F. and Mamie Hill. He joined the Army in 1917 and served with the 74th Company, 6th Regiment, 2nd Division as a corporal. He was killed at the battle of Chateau Thierry on July 19, 1918. Memorial Services -

May 30, 1921

As a part of our Veteran's Affairs responsibilities, Post 44 has performed Memorial Day services almost since it's inception. This is a key aspect of ensuring that all military members and their families know their sacrifices are recognised and honored.  

On this day Postt 44 held a Memorial Day service tand parade o honor our local fallen soldier, Guy Utter.

July 4th Parade

Jul 4, 1922

On this day, as a part of it's Americanism responsibilites, Post 44 lead it's first Fourth of July parade.  With COlor Guard on horseback, the American Legion led the parade down Lincoln Avenue - and has every year since.

Memorial Fountains

Nov 30, 1922

Four Memorial founttains, honoring local World War I veterans were dedicated  and placed along Lincoln Avenue.  One of these fountains remains fully intact and is on display outside our local Tread of Pioneers museum.

Poppy Drive

May 26, 1926

From the battlefields of World War I, weary soldiers brought home the memory of a landscape transformed by wild poppies, red as the blood of fallen soldiers.  The poppy became a symbol of the sacrifice of lives in war and represented the hope that none had died in vain. July 4th Events

Jul 4, 1930

Post 44 Organizes Community events to celebrate Independence Day including parades, rodeo, fireworks & 3 nights of dances.  

The Post remained in charge of organizing these events until the mid 60's when the town took it over.

Community Involvement

Nov 30, 1932

Post 44 purchased and remodeled the old Cheiftain building which provided a place for community meetings and dances.  It was the place of great comradrie for many years.

Boys State

Jan 31, 1949

Post 44 organizes the High School Boys State.  (Girls State begins in 1951)

Peak Membership

Jun 30, 1953

It was this year that Post 44 had it's peak membership - 170.  This is likely the result of the numbers of soldiers in both WW I and WW II.

New Building

Dec 31, 1956

Post 44 sold it's Cheiftain building, which had become known as the Legionaaire Community buildingand purchased the Dinius building at 5th and LIncoln.  The lower floor of this building was used as a community space and the town's library.

Last Memorial Day Parade

May 30, 1958

This was the last Memroial Day parade down Lincoln Avenue with the Boy Scouts.  Ceremonies now take place at the Steamboat Springs cemetary.

Community Center - AL

Dec 31, 1978

Post 44 worked with the CIty of Steamboat Springs to buld a new community center.  his bulding was located next to the town library.

Blue Banner Program

Jan 1, 1994

Post 44 began implementing the American Legion Blue Star Banner program, to recognize and honor families in the community with a member currently serving in the military.

New Community Center

Dec 1, 2008

Post 44 is involved in the planning of the new COmmunity Center.  It is also a major contributor as noted by the American Legion symbol embossed in the main room floor.

Veteran Friendly City

May 30, 2015

Post 44 assists the community of Steamboat Springs in being awarded the Most Veteran Friendly Little City in Colorado.  This is an honor bestowed by the Employer Support of the Guard & Reserve.

Flag Retirement Ceremony
